WHO ARE WE?
The Senior Women's Basketball Association is a nonprofit organization based in San Diego, California. It is governed by an elected executive board. SWBA members are women from all walks of life: business owners, dentists, doctors, engineers, lawyers, homemakers, nurses, military and teachers. Participants must be at least 50 years of age. Our oldest player is 83 years.
WHAT IS OUR GAME?
We play three on three half-court recreational and competitive basketball. Any woman, age 50 or older, who enjoys basketball and shows good sportsmanship may join and play.
LEAGUE PLAY/ RECREATIONAL:
Local: League play is divided into four sessions per year (summer, fall, winter, and spring) and runs for approximately eight to ten weeks per session. Each team plays two 20 minute games weekly under the supervision of qualified referees. These scheduled games are played Sunday afternoons at the Mission Valley YMCA.
TOURNAMENTS / COMPETITIONS:
Local, State, and National Games: The SWBA competes annually in the Senior Olympics at all levels. We compete at the local level every year, at the state level in the even years, and at the national level in the odd years. Local games, sponsored by the San Diego Sports Festival, are held each September. During these local Senior Olympic Games, athletes can qualify to compete in the upcoming state tournament.
CLINICS / TRAINING SESSIONS:
Basketball clinics, for both skilled and unskilled players are held weekly at the Mission Valley YMCA and other locations throughout the area. A nominal fee is charged for these clinics.
MEDIA COVERAGE: The San Diego SWBA "Shooting Stars" have become local celebrities after being featured on many television programs, in newspaper articles and in magazines. Media coverage has included the following:

OTHER ACTIVITIES:
MOVIES: Director Scott Young produced a short movie, "The Shooting Star", about the San Diego Shooting Stars. This film has been shown at the Robert Redford Sundance Film Festival in Utah, the New York Film Festival and the Writers Guild of America in Los Angeles, California.
PROMOTIONAL: Zephyr Images of Solana Beach, California, features SWBA players in its 1999 stock photo catalog of athletes.
WNBA EXHIBITION GAMES: The "Shooting Stars" have performed at the Los Angeles Great Western Forum at halftime during the WNBA SPARKS games. Other halftime exhibition games have been conducted at the University of San Diego, San Diego State University, and at the University of California at San Diego games.
COMMUNITY SERVICE:
Ambassadors Program - The SWBA contributes to community service by conducting speaking engagements, basketball demonstrations and clinics for schools, organizations, clubs, retirement facilities, basketball camps, and women's sports events.
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS:
Any young woman under the age of nineteen or over the age of fifty may apply to be considered for a scholarship. The financial assistance is to provide training to improve her basketball skills or to advance her education while she is playing basketball.
